I was on Radio 4’s The Moral Maze yesterday, where we talked about whether we should regard anything as ‘sacred’, what that would mean, and (in my opinion) why it’s a bad idea.
The show is worth listening to but what I basically said was that everyone has things which, to them, are profoundly significant and meaningful, whether that’s ideas, places, relationships, works of art, or whatever. But the reality is that this is subjective and if we declare something sacred we are trying to place it beyond criticism and engagement, denying ourselves the opportunity to learn and change.
